Joanna Walling is a visual artist, practicing primarily in the mediums of photography and painting.
Her work is inspired by themes of contemplation, memory, place, intimacy, and the transpersonal. Through her mediums, she aims to visually represent the symbolic realm of the unconscious, and subjective inner world, bringing value and discernment to imaginal experience through form, shape, color, and abstraction. In her work, she strives to create an atmospheric sensibility as a somatic opening to the experience of the Other.
Joanna draws inspiration from a variety of sources including philosophy, physics, psychology and the arts. The psychology and philosophy of C. G. Jung, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Merleau-Ponty; the artistry of photographers Minor White, Albarrán Cabrera, Paul Cupido, and the early 20th century Pictoralists form as sources of inspiration along with painters Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Georgia O’keeffe, and contemporaries such Mimi Lauter, and Jongsuk Yoon.
Joanna lives and works in Ojai, California.
